Brahms – A German Requiem, To Words of the Holy Scriptures: It was a work Brahms labored over for a dozen years following the death of his mother. Consoled by the psalms, the gospels, and the prophets, he set their words to what many consider his grandest music. It’s certainly his longest composition, a large-scale work for chorus, orchestra, a soprano and a baritone soloist that keeps listeners enthralled across seven movements, which together last 65 to 80 minutes.
The Soloists: backed by the TSO and Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, soprano Erin Wall and baritone Russell Braun take lead on Brahms’s epic requiem.
Other Works on the Program: Rolf Boon’s Hyacinth Caelum: Sesquie for Canada’s 150th and Alexina Louie’s Triple Concerto for Three Violins and Orchestra (Wednesday, September 27) | Jared Miller’s Buzzer Beater: Sesquie for Canada’s 150th and Alexina Louie’s Triple Concerto for Three Violins and Orchestra (Thursday, September 28)
