Since winning a European apprenticeship with iconic international hair designer Jean Louis David back in the 1970s, John Allan has gone on to establish his own reputation as the head of one of North America’s most esteemed male grooming brands. He launched his first club in New York in 1988, and now has multiple outposts in four major cities (San Francisco, Beverly Hills, and Toronto being the others). Each club has a unique vibe: Midtown has billiards and a full bar, for instance, and San Francisco’s is inside a John Varvatos store. But they still observe many of the same events, such as “Whisky Week” or “Monday.”
The reason the company’s locations are called “clubs” is that men can purchase annual memberships, which get them unlimited appointments for the signature treatment known as the Full Service. This treatment includes a scalp-massaging shampoo and condition, haircut, manicure, and shoeshine.
