On September 9, Riot Fest blows up the end of summer with an arsenal of live music. The fest hosts 10 different indie, rock, punk, and metal artists who unleash melodies under the open sky, letting notes fly freely into the clouds instead of remaining caged under a theater ceiling. The Descendents, a power-pop band that formed in 1979 during the halcyon days of the Los Angeles punk scene, fuse self-deprecating lyrics with chugging power chords in a playful yet passionate performance. Hot Water Music returns refreshed from an eight-year sabbatical with Exister, which infuses mastodonesque guitar-alarums into “Boy, You’re Gonna Hurt Somebody” and layers boisterous rock melodies over the jagged punk bedrock of songs like “Safety” and “Pledge Wore Thin.” Other acts to anchor the stage include skate-punk veterans NOFX; Less Than Jake’s 20-year catalogue of sarcastic choruses, thick ska-horn sections, and bouncy guitar-plucks; and the contagiously energetic Andrew W.K., whose party-inspired rock ‘n’ roll motivates audiences to chant at the top of their lungs and stage-dive into a crowd of piñatas.
