Each concert is held in an intimate venue, and many begin with free preconcert talks that discuss topics such as, “The Piano Trio: A Study in Relationships” and “Wild Composer Hair: Who Wore it Better?” Pianist Kirill Gerstein deftly tickles stubborn ivories until they erupt with dulcet giggles of Beethoven, Brahms, and Liszt. Grammy-getting soprano Christine Brewer charms lyric-starved cochleae with the immortal strains of Wagner, Strauss, and Bachman-Turner, and conductor Jonathan Darlington steers the National Youth Orchestra of Canada through the majestic waters of Mahler’s Symphony no. 5 without splashing audiences with excess treble clefs.
